Hydroponically Grown Thai Basil Fried Rice
Adding a twist to the classic fried rice, this recipe introduces the aromatic and distinctive flavor of Thai basil. Hydroponically grown Thai basil ensures freshness, vibrancy, and a burst of anise-citrus notes, making this fried rice truly unforgettable.
Ingredients:
- Hydroponically Grown Thai Basil: 1 cup, leaves picked and chopped
- Cooked Jasmine Rice: 3 cups (preferably a day old)
- Chicken: 1/2 lb, diced
- Eggs: 2, beaten
- Green Bell Pepper: 1, diced
- Red Onion: 1, finely chopped
- Garlic: 3 cloves, minced
- Soy Sauce: 2 tablespoons
- Oyster Sauce: 1 tablespoon
- Red Chili Flakes: 1/2 teaspoon (adjust to taste)
- Vegetable Oil: 2 tablespoons
- Lime: 1, cut into wedges for serving
Instructions:
- Prep the Ingredients: Ensure the rice is fully cooled (it’s best if refrigerated overnight). This prevents it from getting mushy during the frying process. Have all your ingredients chopped and ready to go.
- Cook the Chicken: In a large pan or wok, heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the diced chicken and cook until it’s golden brown and fully cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed, then toss in the chopped red onion, garlic, and green bell pepper. Sauté until they’re slightly softened and aromatic.
- Add the Rice: Push the veggies to one side of the pan and pour the beaten eggs into the other. Quickly scramble the eggs. Once they’re mostly set, combine them with the veggies, then add the rice. Stir-fry the mixture, ensuring it’s well-mixed.
- Season: Pour the soy sauce and oyster sauce over the rice. Add the red chili flakes. Stir well to ensure even distribution of the sauces and flavors.
- Add Thai Basil: Turn off the heat, then fold in the chopped hydroponically grown Thai basil. The residual heat will wilt the basil just enough while preserving its strong flavor.
- Serve: Dish out the Thai basil fried rice onto plates or in bowls. Garnish with a wedge of lime on the side, and maybe even more fresh Thai basil if desired.
Tip: Feel free to customize the fried rice by adding your favorite veggies or protein. Shrimp, tofu, or even beef strips would work wonders in this recipe. The star, however, is the hydroponically grown Thai basil, which infuses the dish with a flavor that sets it apart from traditional fried rice. Enjoy!
